Peru Stripped Down to its Roots

16 September 2007 | Peru, Arequipa

(Written in Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Once upon a time two incredibly good looking girls arrived in the country of Incas, lamas and mysticism.

It was named Peru and wasn’t destined for Miss Nail polish or any of that sort with intolerable criticism.

Two days they spent in Lima, the capital and known for its villains and dangers.

Miraculously they survived, even without losing their passports to any dodgy strangers.

After two months of daily moving on and living out of a bag,

They decided to settle down for a while, ´cause it was becoming quite a drag.

Cusco became the chosen city, where they spent three weeks of their lives so young.

Even though it was hard to breathe, they tried to master the Spanish tongue.

What better way to do this than to have Dora and Yuliana create some insight,

Go out, talk to strangers and come home to a Spanish family at night.

the first week the heroines were separated by a different host to drive their language improval to the top.

In a homely house filled with Belgian volunteers they found their second stop.

Then altitude and street food got to them a bit.

And when Babs was resting in her bed, flees thought that she was quite a hit.

Once bacterias and flees were conquered, it was time for cultural exploration

Site after site they were struck with admiration.

The funniest incident was on the Machu Picchu, where Marlies was almost kicked out.

That was because she talked a guy into taking his clothes off. The lady has seducing powers, no doubt!

After cosy Cusco, las chicas Belgas took the bus to cross the Andes, rocky and tiring.

The mysterious Nasca lines were awaiting them, overlooked by tourists that couldn't stop admiring.

In order to watch those cries for rain, our heroines had to rise, higher and higher, to the position of the gods.

Their means: a small unreliable plane that didn't give much opportunity for any moves or nods.

The spider, hummingbird and astronaut glowed beautifully from high above.

The flying object took much turns, which Marlies didn't really love.

Her face turned whiter and grey, the bag in her hand ready to use.

No god would tolerate this torture and that perhaps explains why they had to refuse.

After a two day trek with a fun group in the Colca Canyon and games of poker for corn.

They gazed at hovering condors, into what they wanted to be reborn.

Back in Arequipa the monastery made them consider to become a nun.

Wisely enough, they stepped on the bus, life was too much fun!

The last stop they made, was at Lake Titicaca.

This highest navigable lake in the world is a delight for the eye.

But you better make sure you don’t fall in, ´cause they’ll consider you an offering and let you die.

Las chicas tested the floating islands, and spent the night on electricity less land.

Dancing and looking at the wonderful sky in traditional fat assed dresses made by hand.

In short: the colourful country of smiles and ´yes yes 100% alpaca wool´ left them memories they’ll always treasure.

People they met under a blue sky, belief in Pachamama, Inca mysteries and beauty beyond measure.

The country left them breathless, in every possible way.

And that is how the girls spent the unforgettable month of May.
